Skip Airbnb's Fees: Book Direct in Playa del Carmen
Airbnb hid its service fee in the price instead of showing it at checkout. It's still there. Booking direct means it never enters the price at all.
You won't see Airbnb's fee at checkout anymore. As of this September, Airbnb folded the guest service fee into the price the host sets instead of showing it as a separate line item. The fee didn't go away — it's just not itemized anymore. Hosts still absorb it, roughly 15.5%, and that cost is still built into what you pay. It's just harder to see now.
Booking direct means that same cost never enters the price in the first place. Here's what that actually looks like.
What used to show up at checkout
Under the old model, a guest booking on Airbnb would see a service fee added on top of the nightly rate — typically somewhere between 14% and 16.5% of the subtotal, plus a separate cleaning fee. That fee funded Airbnb's platform, not the stay itself.
The new model hides that number, but it doesn't remove it. Hosts still pay roughly 15.5% to Airbnb, and that cost gets priced into the nightly rate you see. You're paying the same fee — you just can't point to it anymore.
What direct booking changes
Book directly with us and there's no platform sitting between you and the price. You pay for the stay. That's the whole model — the rate you see is the rate that pays for the property, not a rate with an invisible platform cut baked in.
Is direct booking safe?
Fair question, and worth answering honestly. Direct-booking sites do have a real trust gap compared to a platform like Airbnb — no built-in dispute resolution, no platform-backed guarantee if something goes wrong. That's a real risk with an operator you don't know.
