Where to Stay in Playa del Carmen the First Time

5th Avenue is the obvious answer to where to stay in Playa del Carmen. It's also usually the wrong one. Here's what actually works for a first trip.

The short answer

You want to be close enough to walk to 5th Avenue whenever you feel like it, and far enough that you're not staying on it. That's the whole trick, and almost no guide says it plainly.

Why not stay directly on 5th Avenue

You'll pay a premium for the address, and you'll hear it too — the music, the timeshare pitches, the foot traffic, running well past midnight most nights. It's the tourist zone doing exactly what a tourist zone does. Fine for two nights. A rough deal for a full week when you actually want to sleep.

The three real options

What "walkable" actually means here

Walkable means something specific, not a vibe. From a well-placed stay in Centro or Zazil-Ha, you're looking at roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk to Cenote Jardín del Edén for a swim, a similar walk to Playa 38 or Playa 72 for a quieter beach day, a short walk to the Sunday Bazaar if your dates line up with it, and an easy 10 to 20 minute walk to the ADO terminal when it's time to catch a bus to Tulum or the airport.
