The mistake is building a trip around a single beach day. Build it around a place you can walk out of. Playa del Carmen works for this because the town is the point: 5th Avenue, Parque Fundadores, the ferry to Cozumel and the ADO bus terminal are all a short walk from the sand, so a day that does not go to the beach still has somewhere to go.
Where to go when the ocean isn't the plan
Freshwater does not care about the sea. A cenote such as Jardín El Edén, about 20 minutes north, is an open-air limestone bowl where the water is the same any day you arrive. Cozumel's reefs sit offshore across the ferry, on a four-hour snorkel tour with its own boat and crew. Chichen Itza, Tulum with Akumal, and Xcaret each fill a day that never depends on the shoreline.

The freshwater options, at a glance
Jardín El Edén is about 20 minutes north and roughly $15 USD. Punta Esmeralda is free, 10 minutes north. Cristalino is about 35 minutes south and around $10 USD. Dos Ojos is about 55 minutes south at $25 to $35 USD, and Gran Cenote is about 60 minutes south at roughly $20 USD. Fees change, so ask us for the current price and taxi rate before you go.
What to do on the day
Ask your host or a local the morning you want to go. They will know what the shoreline looks like that day, which no guide written in advance can tell you. If the answer is that it is a poor day, you have already planned the second half.
